Evaluation programme to establish whether ID checking policies for alcohol purchase are adhered to, suitable for:

Pub Companies
Off-Licence Chains
Supermarkets
Convenience Stores
With nearly every Trading Standards area actively pursuing test purchasing of alcohol, and pubcos becoming potentially liable for heavy fines for repeat offences, our programme will help your company evaluate whether ID checking policies are working and provide a demonstration that you are actively combating the problem. A typical purchase programme will involve:

  • Test Purchasers dressed and styled in a manner to which ID should be challenged by the retailer
  • Purchasers work in groups of two or three for authenticity
  • While in-store they behave in role and are audio-linked to supervisor outside or inside outlet
  • No illegal purchase is made - purchasers are 18+ although appearing otherwise
  • Purchasers will select or ask for relevant product and attempt purchase, noting staff and POS material
  • ID is not volunteered. If challenged, purchaser will attempt to persuade staff member to serve without ID
  • If still refused, ID will not be produced and purchaser will retreat from store.
  • Attention will be given by supervisor or purchaser as to whether refusal is recorded
  • Transaction or attempted purchase may be videoed for record
  • Notation made of Point of Sale material and whether it is in accordance with the retailers policy
  • Purchase or non-purchase recorded with as much information as has been noted including whether staff display POS material, how transaction was made and conducted
  • All data is collated at time of visit and statistics produced to show percentages of successful/refused transactions
  • Repeat visit made post-training or for re-assessment 1-2 weeks later
  • Shoppers will dress for the part, in accordance with projected age.
